reworking the work

we haven't touched the blogs since the mt upgrade, and i am doing precious little of it tonight, however, we did... 1. tweak the "create new entry interface" to limit its options and 2. change the weblog config to change the default status of posts from draft to publish, and email new comments to us.

there were some other config items i was tempted by but it seemed like it would just invoke more spam. :(

other things on my todo list... * creative commons license * category templates * add sven & gretchin to post notification? * tweak the templates again, especially to denote multiple posts in a day

zines!

sven & i got to talking about zines today to see if that would be a small-step way to work on publishing the youthlib essays. zines could then move to small books, and then compiled into a larger book. sven was so excited he's already made a mockup (in word!).

other potential items of interest: 1. collapsing notepad & generator together so that generator becomes a place for all types of content, categorized by type of essay (fragment, exploration, draft, essay etc.). each type would have a different template including a colored label & explanatory text. we would need to use the import/export feature or sven says we could take an afternoon and move them manually.

  1. zine subscriptions could include artwork and other outside contributions; hopefully, they could even get paid. it would be a good reason to get a paypal account and have a "subscriptions AT youthlib.com" address. getting outside contributions might require the help of an editor (carl?).

testing markdown

i'm testing the markdown plugin syntax: mph says it's pretty sweet. how sweet is it?

  1. like creme brulee
  2. like honey
  3. like pop rocks
  4. all the above

we * adore * worship * praise

michael hall.

*happy sigh* gl. likes new, and very useful, toys. :)

in a completely unrelated note, i found a bit of a poem (from youth & calm):

Youth dreams a bliss on this side of death.
It dreams a rest, if not more deep,
More grateful than this marble sleep;
It hears a voice within it tell:
Calm's not life's crown, though calm is well.
'Tis all perhaps which man acquires,
But 'tis not what our youth desires.
Matthew Arnold

very nice!

first email spam

bah! we got our first spam (as our very first email *sigh*) last night sent to infoATyouthlib.com. where the heck is that even published? i want to think of a system of creating email addresses which are generic enough but informative and easily rotatable in case one of them gets overwhelmed w/ spam. sven, this is why i don't want to publish either of our email addresses on the site, why those addresses should only be given out to actual human beings. if you want a contact listed on the site, we ought to create a special one that will forward to wherever you want it to go.

Learned MT-Blacklist today

Three spams showed up recently on Generator. Finally gave MT-Blacklist a whirl. [Wow! Excellent little bit of programming there.] Now they're deleted... And I have a skill I should have investigated three months ago.

Switch from AOL to Easystreet

I'm reviewing the Easystreet Terms of Use:

http://www.easystreet.com/services/acceptable.html

It strikes me that these two sections may be of relevance to youthlib.com activities...

4.0 Email Policy

For those EasyStreet accounts running their own mail servers, we require that you disable relaying. This ensures that your mail server will not become a relay source of unsolicited email. If unsolicited email passes through your mail server, the account may be deactivated and incur EasyStreet administration charges. There is a $100 charge for every five spam abuse complaints for each incident.

7.0 Non-commercial Use

Some EasyStreet accounts, such as the Enthusiast DSL, are designated for non-commercial use. The access portion of these accounts must terminate at a non-commercial address. Web sites or other services on IP addresses of these accounts must be of a non-commercial nature. Selling of products, solicitations for business and/or exchange of funds or bartering are considered commercial uses. Domain names associated with these accounts must not be registered under company names. In questionable cases, EasyStreet's sole discretion will prevail.

Spammers hit Generator

I got notification on Jan 5 that three new comments had been posted to my Generator post, Property and Owernship - Part 3. Take a look...

The "posted by" links go to ads for paxil, levitra, and fioricet, respectively. The culprits are techno@msn.com, genchet@yahoo.com, and genchet@mail.com.

What is the appropriate action to take?

Added Recent Comments Tracking

Added a "recent comments" section to the sidebar so non-item-owners can easily spot whether a new comment has been added that might warrant attention/feedback without having to check down the length of the page. Holler if it offends and I'll pluck it back out.

Oh.

Happy New Year!

Nickname test

The purpose of this post is to test whether or not my messages are now appended with "posted by sven".

ghost writers

sven, i need you to change a setting in your account so your name is attached to posts (right now your posts read "posted by at 11:46 PM" as opposed to "posted by sven at 11:46 PM" :).

go to the Main Menu, Edit Profile, and change your Nickname to "sven" or whatever. i suspect it's blank now. :)

Workflow v1.0

So, I want to develop a workflow for the youthlib.com / notepad / generator project. We brainstormed a little at dinner tonight. Here's the prioritized list of what I should be doing:

1. Respond to emails
2. Write new posts to Notepad
3. Respond to comments on Notepad
4. Write new material for Generator

The philosophy behind this is that I should focus foremost upon making connections with other people -- creating a repository of essays really comes second.

future site goals

next round:
* ada
* css

things which do not have to be done immediately, but which might make a nice "round x" projects:
* glossary
* quote generator
* essay abstracts
* paypal (why?)

round 1 site goals

things which need to get done for the first round of site creation, in no particular order:

* youthlib.com "about this site" (1 or 2 sentences for main page, +longer if sven finds useful)
[update: sven has written this.]

* sven bio (but how to integrate? is yl.com all about sven? could this be the start of "all yl activist bios/contact info" we discusses earlier? if so, decide on standard format which could then be applied to other activists like adam/tonia)

* "no dogs or minors"

* helvetica bold for "youthlib.com" (or is it YouthLib.com? or Youthlib.com?)

* colors=green, fresh, like leaves

* links & explanations to notepad, generator

* tweak notepad, generator to integrate w/ main yl site (make sure comments are appropriate)

* contact form (first figure out what addresses to have, then determine filtering mechanism. some possibilities: sven@, gl@, info@, notepad@ & generator@ & dev@ [for update mailings],)
also, options for the form:
* comment on an essay
* request to republish / re-post an essay
* request for speaking engagement
* report problem with site
* add to notepad notification list
* add to generator notification list
* other

* link to "5 best" or "read me first" essays, with a sentence about why

* decide on headers/topics (essays, tools, quotes, pix, links?)

* terms of use or caveats for generator essays and/or notepad entries

* creative commons license

* links to other sites
