For what it's worth:
Everything in the /www directory, which contains everything in the way of page layouts and actual pages, is backed up every night via rsync. One backup goes to a file server on my local network (carryall), and another goes to a backup directory on Michael Burton's server (ash).
In addition, the MySQL database (which contains the actual content of each item you post to Movable Type) is dumped, zipped up, and sent to both carryall and ash each night.
Don't know how useful that is to you, but it's what happens by default.
Once Sven has broadband, it would be a very simple matter to set up an Applescript that does about the same thing as my current backup regimen on demand to do a snapshot backup from the server to Sven's Mac. The nice thing about rsync is that it only copies over files that have been added or changed, so once the initial backup is complete, it's very undemanding in terms of bandwidth and time: mere seconds to move a large site over on the average day, when only a page or two are added or changed.
I used rsync pretty happily to sync work files on my iBook with the files on my main server before I went on extended trips. Pretty nice to know everything I had was up to date, and that any changes I made on the road would be synchronized the next time I ran rsync at home.

can i say "thank you" enough? you're so conscientious! when sven reads this, i think he'll be SO HAPPY! (i can immediately induce horror & dread on his face when i ask, "so are you uh, backing up?" :)
